Overcoat is a long coat which protects the wearer from cold, wind, dust and rain.
However, overcoat must not be confused with topcoats. Overcoat would extend below the knee while topcoat usually end at or above the knee. Together they are known as outercoats.
Wearing outercoat normally would signify that a man is on his way to somewhere.
If a man is taking off his overcoat, it means he has arrived.
If a man is putting on his overcoat, it is the indication that he intends to leave.
If a man who arrives without taking off his outercoat, it would construed as he's being reserve, distrust of someone or something or just his indecision.
A true statement of style is when a man wears the appropriate overcoat that suits the occasion.
